Thousand-Hand Guanyin
Deaf Dancers perfectly coordinated
There is an impressive
dance, called the Thousand-Hand Guanyin. Considering the required strict coordination, it is amazing, especially
given that all dancers are deaf. Yes, you read it correctly. All 21 dancers are completely deaf and mute. They follow the signs of their teachers
situated in the four corners of the stage. The extraordinary dancers offer a visual spectacle. Their first International debut was in
Athens Turing the closing ceremony of the Paralympics Games in 2004. They are part of the repertory of the
Chinese Disabled People’s Performing Art and have travelled to more than 40
countries.
Their first dancer is 29
year old Tai Lihua. She has a BA
from the Institute of Performing Arts in Hubei. The video was taken in Beijing during this year’s Spring
Festival.

Disabled savings plan means benefits clawed back
CTV interview in support of Bill 94
(play the video)
Ms. Sylvia Jones, Dufferin-Caledon MPP and the Progressive Conservative community and social services critic, has introduced a private member's bill in the Ontario legislature that will prevent the provincial Liberals from "clawingback" investments made into a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). As the law stands in Ontario, the RDSP would be considered an additional asset to be taken into consideration when calculating social assistance benefits. Thus, it could mean a reduced amount paid in the benefit or even disqualification to receive any.
Ildiko's family is a Lifetime Sustaining Member of LNO.
Note: On November 30, 2008 the government of Ontario announced that they will be fully exempting the RDSP as an asset and income for people receiving provincial financial assistance (ODSP).
